FACTOR EIGHT – GLASS BOTTLE VERSUS PET BOTTLES/NOT ALL CONTAINERS ARE OF EQUAL QUALITY AND SAFETY

The usage of PET plastic bottles as a container for bottled water is spreading worldwide. The trouble with most PET bottles is that after a month or so, chemicals known as DEHA leach out into the water. Re-using PET bottles is a definite NO. See http://www.greenyes.grrn.org/2003/08/msg00006.html for a research article on the matter.

The fact of the matter is that I have observed many PET bottled water being delivered exposed to sunlight in open trucks – the leaching effect is potentiated by sunlight!

BEFORE YOU PANIC, please let me explain the situation as I have also personally drank from PET bottles in the past but of course stopped immediately on reading the relevant research papers! Toxic chemicals in small quantities can probably be handled by your body and cleaned from the body. However, it is the chronic consumption of toxic chemicals over a long period of time, for example, drinking from PET bottles for greater than one year that leads to a cumulative dose effect. When the cumulated dose reaches the point whereby your body defence mechanisms is unable to cope, all hell breaks loose and that is when you will suffer the full blown toxic effects of the chemicals.

Not all glass bottles meet SAQ standards either. I have reports on re-cycled glass bottles containing toxic chemicals as well as this process is not entirely pristine. For example, if you mix leaded glass into a recycled pool of glass, lead will be contained in the recycle bottle. Thus one has to be cautious in utilizing recycled bottles; do not use it unless you are certain of what it contains and more importantly what it DOES NOT contain!!!

Ideally, the best way to guarantee a safe bottle is to use virgin glass that contains no lead or chemicals. SAQ only utilizes unleaded virgin glass bottles (at great expense) from a German JV corporation. SAQ glass bottles are as pure as you can purchase in commercial quantities. We trim our profit margins and spend were it counts – this is reassurance for public health and SAQ values your personal health dearly so please support us to maintain gold standards.
